Where Can I Find Music Lessons for My Child to Prepare for AMEB Exams?

TL;DR

For AMEB preparation, look for a teacher with experience on your child’s instrument and grade. The teachers below offer AMEB preparation, syllabus teaching, theory support or assessment expertise across Sydney. Ask which exam format the teacher recommends, what practical and theory work it includes, and how lessons will fit around school.

Looking for AMEB music lessons in Sydney for your child? Start with a teacher who regularly prepares students for the exam on the instrument your child wants to learn. The right teacher should be able to explain the current syllabus, build the exam skills into ordinary lessons, and set a practice routine your child can manage alongside school.

Sydney Music Lessons offers one-to-one tuition in piano, cello, guitar, clarinet and other instruments. For the theory part of your child’s exam pathway, explore our AMEB music theory lessons in Sydney alongside practical lessons.

How Can We Help Your Child Prepare For AMEB?

Our one-to-one lessons let us focus preparation on your child’s instrument, exam pathway and learning habits. We can provide the following support, from finding the right teacher to a focused rehearsal before exam day.

Your AMEB Preparation Checklist With Sydney Music Lessons

  1. Match the teacher to the exam and the child. We use your child’s instrument, playing level, age, suburb and goals to identify suitable teachers, then consider teaching style, schedule and budget. Our network includes practical exam tutors, theory teachers and a brass teacher with AMEB adjudication experience.
  2. Build a syllabus map. We can help select the grade and exam format, check the syllabus for the intended exam year, and map the required repertoire, technical work and supporting tests. For Comprehensive exams, this means preparing the required aural, sight-reading and general knowledge work alongside the pieces. For Repertoire exams, preparation centres on the complete performance programme.
  3. Find and work on the gaps. Through individual assessment and feedback, we can target uneven scales, insecure rhythm, difficult transitions, tone or intonation, and the supporting skills required by the syllabus. We can also provide theory tuition for the relevant AMEB pathway. Leah’s teaching spans repertoire, technique, aural skills, sight-reading and general knowledge; Janet provides AMEB theory tuition and mock exams.
  4. Make home practice specific. We can turn lesson feedback into a manageable weekly plan: the passage to practise, the tempo or technique to focus on, and what a successful attempt sounds like. Luka’s background in Psychology and Neuroscience informs his focus on attention, muscle memory and habit formation. This helps us make preparation workable around school rather than relying on vague instructions to “practise more”.
  5. Rehearse the exam experience. We can provide mock exam practice, uninterrupted run-throughs and feedback on the areas that still need attention. Preparation can include starting confidently, recovering from a mistake and answering general knowledge questions where required. Our teachers also bring practical performance opportunities: Keyna organises student concerts and Andrew hosts regular recitals.
  6. Check the final details. We can review readiness, score markings, programme order and any accompaniment requirements, and help prepare for the chosen in-person or video format. We can guide video candidates through a recording rehearsal using AMEB NSW’s preparation guidance, so practical arrangements are addressed before submission day.

Sydney Music Lessons brings instrumental tuition and music theory lessons in Sydney together through one service. A child can receive instrumental preparation, focused theory support and teaching that suits their personality, with clear priorities at each stage.

What Does An AMEB Practical Exam Involve?

AMEB requirements vary by instrument, grade and syllabus. The 2025 regulations describe Comprehensive practical examinations from Preliminary to Grade 8 in three sections: Technical Work; Studies and Pieces; and Aural Tests, Sight-Reading and General Knowledge. The detailed requirements within each section depend on the instrument and grade.

How do Comprehensive and Repertoire exams differ?

A Repertoire exam assesses the prepared programme only. Some instruments offer both formats, but the options and required pieces differ, so check the syllabus for the exam your child plans to enter. AMEB’s Manual of Syllabuses and examination rules sets out the assessment structure and current requirements. Use the version that applies to the intended exam year.

Do higher practical grades require a theory pass?

AMEB’s published additional requirements generally call for a pass in Grade 2 Theory of Music, Musicianship or Music Craft for practical Grade 6, Grade 3 for Grade 7, and Grade 4 for Grade 8. The requirements do not apply to Piano for Leisure, Saxophone for Leisure and Singing for Leisure exams. Check the relevant instrument syllabus and current rules, and ask the teacher to map out any theory requirement early.

For focused support with that part of the pathway, ask whether the teacher covers the correct AMEB theory subject and grade, or whether your child would benefit from separate theory tuition.

What Should I Ask Before Booking Lessons?

Use these questions when contacting a teacher:

  • How many students have you prepared for this AMEB instrument and grade?
  • Which exam format and syllabus version are you using?
  • Do lessons cover the supporting skills as well as the prepared pieces?
  • Can you also teach the theory subject required for this pathway, or recommend a separate theory teacher?
  • Where are lessons held, and are online or home lessons available?
  • What is the current fee and lesson length, and what is your cancellation policy?

You could write: “I’m looking for lessons for my child, aged [age], who plays [instrument] at about [level]. We are considering an AMEB [grade/format] exam around [time]. We live in [suburb] and can do [days/times]. Could you tell me about your experience preparing students for this exam, the lesson format and current fees?”

The best starting point is a teacher who knows the relevant AMEB syllabus and can explain how they would prepare your child, step by step. Browse the available Sydney Music Lessons options if theory is also part of the plan, then confirm the instrument teacher’s current experience and availability before deciding.
