Simon — Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Euphonium, Tuba & Music Theory Teacher

Simon is a highly experienced brass teacher and conductor with over 40 years of professional teaching and performance experience. A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, he holds a Bachelor of Music (Trombone) and a Master of Music in Arranging, and has studied with leading musicians including Denis Wick of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Simon focuses on developing the complete musician. His lessons integrate technique, theory, ear training and sight reading, with a strong emphasis on brass pedagogy including breath control, embouchure development, tone production, and efficient movement through principles such as the Alexander Technique. Students are guided clearly towards their goals, whether that is exams, auditions or personal progression, with a focus on long-term development.

His students have gone on to win music scholarships, gain entry into the Sydney Conservatorium, and pursue professional careers. Alongside private teaching, Simon has spent many years as a brass tutor and conductor across schools and ensembles, and has also worked as an AMEB brass adjudicator. His depth of experience allows him to quickly identify what each student needs and provide a structured path forward.

I met Simon around 10 years ago a friend of mind recommended him to me. I spent 11 years in the RAN Band as a trombone player, and I wanted to improve my technique.

Simon helped me gain confidence and made changes to my technique to my playing. I would recommend Simon to any beginner to advanced player that is interested in improving their technique and performance abilities.

I am writing to inform you the good news that Alexander Ren has been offered Music Scholarship at Newington College for Year 7 entry in 2021. He is very excited and I would like to express my sincere gratitude for helping him reaching this achievement. Alexander has always been enjoying your lessons and is motivated to take on challenges, thanks to your encouragement.

I have seen him improving not only in the techniques of trombone playing, but also his knowledge in music, sight reading, and aural skills, and most importantly his love of music. He is actively engaged in the school band and community youth band.

Thank you again for your effort in inspiring and teaching Alexander!
