Which guitar should you pick: acoustic, electric, or bass?

Acoustic is the simplest and self-contained: strumming, fingerpicking, and songwriting, with a naturally warm and “honest” sound. Start here if you want strong fundamentals fast — see acoustic guitar lessons.

Electric is all about tone control and lead playing: riffs, solos, and modern band sounds. It often feels easier on the fingers early on, and you can practise quietly with the right setup — see electric guitar lessons.

Bass is the foundation: groove, pulse, and locking in with the drums. If you like rhythm, feel, and making the whole band sound tighter, bass is a great fit — see bass guitar lessons.

If you’re unsure, get in touch and we’ll help you decide.

Common Challenges & How We Help You Overcome Them

Most beginners run into similar hurdles. Fingers get sore, chords buzz, strumming feels awkward and rhythm can be hard to control at first. These challenges are normal and short-lived when you’re taught the right way, which is exactly what good guitar lessons provide.

Your teacher will show you how to fret cleanly without excess tension, how to keep your wrist relaxed for smoother strumming and how to move between chords without breaking the rhythm. You’ll also learn small practice habits that make a huge difference, like slowing down tricky parts, using anchor fingers and working in short, focused bursts.

FAQs

Yes. You’ll need an acoustic, electric or classical guitar at home so you can practise between lessons. We can help you choose one that suits your goals.

Both are fine. Acoustic helps develop finger strength and rhythm. Electric is easier on the hands and suits rock, pop and blues. Your teacher can recommend the best fit.

Most students can play basic songs within a few weeks. More advanced music comes with consistent practice.

It’s normal. Calluses form quickly and make playing much more comfortable. Proper technique also reduces soreness.

Not always. Many guitarists start with chords and tabs. Traditional notation is useful later, especially for classical guitar.

Yes. You can explore rock, pop, folk, blues, classical or any combination. Lessons are tailored to your interests.

Regular short practice works best. Ten to fifteen minutes a day builds progress faster than a long session once a week.

You don’t need theory to start, but learning the basics helps your playing make more sense as you progress.

Yes. AMEB offers classical and contemporary guitar exams. Your teacher will guide you if you choose that path.

Children often benefit from 1/2 or 3/4 size guitars. We can help you choose the right size for comfort and technique.

Yes. Online lessons work well with clear demonstration and teacher feedback, especially in the early stages.

In your first guitar lessons, we’ll lock in posture, pick/strum comfort, and clean fretting so notes don’t buzz and your hands don’t fatigue. You’ll learn a few core open chords and a simple strumming pattern, then use them on a real song straight away.

Typical focus: setup, clean fretting, open chords, basic strumming
