Cairn — Double Bass, Electric Bass, Ableton, Cubase, Composition & Music Theory Teacher
Cairn is a Bachelor of Music Performance (Jazz) graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, specialising in double bass and electric bass. As an active performer, composer, and teacher in the Sydney music scene, he brings both formal training and real-world experience to his lessons.
He has studied under respected Australian bassists Craig Scott, Cameron Undy, and Brendan Clarke, developing a strong musical foundation across both small ensembles and larger group settings. Cairn has performed at major venues and events including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall, Manly Jazz Festival, and International Jazz Day in Melbourne. He has also recorded at Sony Recording Studios as part of the Count Us In music initiative, and performed in the School Spectacular Stage Band.
Alongside performing, Cairn has built strong teaching experience across school and ensemble settings. He teaches double bass and electric bass at local primary and secondary schools, works with HSC and school ensembles, and has also taught in workshops and music camps across the Sydney region.
His teaching focuses on building well-rounded musicians through note reading, aural development, music theory, and overall musicianship. He works with students using standard notation, tablature, and learning by ear, while also tailoring lessons to each student’s interests so learning stays engaging, practical, and enjoyable.
