Music Lessons for Adults

Who It’s For

Music Lessons for Adults in Sydney

Start something new, pick up where you left off, or finally tick off a lifelong goal. We match adult learners with teachers who understand busy lives.

Why Adults Come to Music

Adults usually come to music with a reason of their own: a childhood instrument they never stuck with, a song they want to play for a partner, a creative outlet outside work, or a goal such as auditions, performing or recording their own music. Knowing your reason helps us find the right teacher.

One of our adult students put it this way after learning with Leah: “Leah helped me achieve lifetime goal of learning the piano as an adult.” (Samiha, adult student)

Lessons That Fit Around Work and Family

Adult schedules are rarely tidy. When you enquire, tell us when you are free and where you are, and we will look for teachers with that time available. Many adults choose lessons at home to skip the commute, or online lessons to fit around work. Others prefer to visit a teacher’s studio, especially for piano or drums.

You are in charge of the pace. Some adults want a weekly lesson with structured practice. Others want a fortnightly check-in and room to explore. A good teacher will adapt to what your life can support.

What Adult Learners Can Learn

Play the Music You Love

Many adult-friendly teachers build lessons around songs you already know, adding theory and technique as you go, so you stay motivated.

Learn to Read, or Don’t

Reading notation is useful but optional. Some teachers offer both reading and non-reading approaches, depending on your goal.

Sing, Write and Produce

Beyond instruments, adults often want voice lessons, songwriting, or music production in Logic Pro and Ableton.

Tips for Starting as an Adult

Be patient with the first month. The early weeks feel slow because your hands, ears and brain are all learning at once. That is normal at any age.

Little and often wins. Fifteen minutes most days is worth more than an hour once a week. Your teacher can suggest a routine that fits your day.

Talk about your goal. “Play for fun”, “pass an AMEB exam” and “perform at an open mic” lead to different lessons. Tell your teacher early.

Ask about equipment. Before buying an instrument, ask your teacher what to look for. You may not need to spend much to get started.

Common Questions

Am I too old to start learning music?

No. Our teachers work with adults of every age. For example, Keyna welcomes learners from 3 to 80, Janet teaches piano to students aged 5 to 90, and Stephen began the flute himself as an adult.

Do I need to read music?

Not necessarily. Some teachers can teach both reading and non-reading approaches. Tell us how you prefer to learn and we will match accordingly.

How often should I have lessons?

Most adults start weekly or fortnightly. Weekly gives faster progress and fortnightly gives more practice time between lessons. Your teacher can help you decide.

Do I have to sit exams?

No. Exams such as AMEB are optional. Many adults learn purely for enjoyment, while others use exams as a goal. Teachers can support either path.

Can I learn online or at home?

Yes to both. Many teachers travel to your home or teach online, and some teach from a studio. See our pages on lessons at your home and online lessons.

How much do adult lessons cost?

Teachers on this page range from $60 to $110 an hour, and across Sydney rates run from $50 to $180 an hour. Tell us your budget and we will find teachers who fit it.

Ready to Start or Restart?

Tell us your instrument, your suburb and what you want to get out of it. We will match you with a patient, vetted teacher.
