Melanie — Singing Teacher

Melanie — Singing Teacher

Melanie is an experimental vocalist, songwriter, and accordionist whose transdisciplinary practice moves between sound, performance, and testimony. She is completing her third and final album, an eight track collection paired with eight tracks of truth-telling delivered as audio/visual works, using footage of locations significant to her father’s story. Rooted in radical honesty and embodied advocacy, the project uses music and image as vessels for stories too often silenced.

Central to Melanie’s practice is her path as an Engaged Buddhist, integrating contemplative discipline with direct social action. This grounding shapes her creative process and her ethical commitments, informing how she holds space for difficult material and approaches her own lived experience of violence and disability with honesty rather than aestheticized pain. Her practice is a way of staying present with suffering long enough to transform it into something communicable.

Melanie’s work stands in solidarity with survivor movements, amplifying voices from psychiatric harm, domestic violence, institutional child sexual abuse, and incest. Her practice is built around bearing witness, creating spaces where these experiences can be met with dignity. This final, funded project stands as a distillation of that commitment, a complete act of testimony through sound and image.

Melanie is a great teacher. She is a very skilled vocalist herself and is able to adapt her teaching to suit unique learning needs (like mine). She has helped me extend my range and ability, so I am confident in using my singing voice in recorded and live performances!

It was amazing, and I could feel your heart, especially when you were singing about the disaster in Australia. I could feel the pain of nature and your worries and sadness.
Your educational workshop was impressive. Through the workshop, children could strengthen their connection with nature and hear their inner sound in an indigenous way, peacefully.
You guided children quite well. And they could concentrate on their pains and understand their pains.
