What Does A Singing Audition Actually Assess?

An audition can assess how you use your voice, interpret a song and respond as a performer. The balance depends on the role or course. Bring the complete audition brief to your teacher so your lessons address the material and skills being assessed.

Compare Preparation Priorities By Audition Type

Use your audition brief to identify the preparation you need, then explore teachers with relevant strengths.

Audition TypeWhat To Check And PrepareTeacher Strengths To Explore
Musical TheatreSong contrast, character intention and any acting or dance tasks. NIDA’s 2027 requirements, for example, include two contrasting songs with accompaniment and a monologue.Ginny for audition and drama school coaching; Ashlee for musical theatre, storytelling and stage presence.
Classical VoiceCheck the prescribed repertoire, language, memory and accompaniment requirements. The Sydney Conservatorium’s admissions FAQ also specifies an interview for classical voice or opera applicants.Ashlee brings postgraduate opera training and experience teaching classical voice and audition preparation.
Contemporary SingingCheck whether covers, original material, improvisation or technical tasks are required. WAAPA’s 2027 Contemporary Performance guide asks for a cover and a contrasting piece featuring improvisation or original work, plus additional tasks.Elisa for adult contemporary singing, expression and audition preparation; Ginny for singing, songwriting and live performance experience.

Submitting a video? Video is a format that can apply to any of these audition types. Check the required framing, duration, accompaniment balance and submission instructions. Bring your brief, track or score to your lesson so preparation follows the actual requirements.

Vocal Technique, Musicality And Acting

WAAPA’s 2027 Music Theatre audition guide lists singing technique and musicality alongside imaginative acting in both songs and monologues. Its video submission also includes dance. This makes the meaning of the song part of your preparation: identify who the character is addressing, what they want and how the thought develops through the lyrics. Ashlee’s storytelling and stage-presence teaching, and Ginny’s audition coaching, are relevant to this work.

What Are Contrasting Songs?

Two contrasting songs should reveal different aspects of your performance. WAAPA gives differences in tempo, mood or style as examples.  NIDA’s Musical Theatre application requirements for 2027 suggest contemporary versus classic or comic versus dramatic material. Two different song titles alone do not necessarily create a useful contrast.

When discussing a pair with your teacher, consider both the musical difference and the character’s intention. Choose material that suits your voice and lets you communicate clearly. A slower, reflective song and a more energetic character song might show different strengths, provided both meet the brief.

Song Length, Memory And Accompaniment

An audition cut is the excerpt you prepare within the requested length. WAAPA’s 2027 video guide asks for two memorised songs of approximately 90 seconds each, with live or recorded accompaniment. NIDA’s current requirements ask for two musical theatre songs of approximately one minute each, also with accompaniment or a backing track. Neither accepts a cappella singing for this task. These are examples for those applications, rather than a standard length for every audition.

Prepare a clear start and finish to the excerpt, and rehearse with the accompaniment you will actually use. Check the key, entry cue and ending before the final run-through. For recorded submissions, listen back to ensure the backing does not overpower your voice. Bring the track or score to your lesson so the work connects to your final performance.

What Happens At A Callback?

A callback is a further audition for shortlisted applicants. NIDA explains that it may involve performance, group work and learning new material, with attention to how applicants respond to direction and work with others. Preparing only one fixed version of a song can leave you less ready for that process.

In your lessons, explore another interpretation of a phrase, a different emotional intention or a change in delivery. Practising those choices is a useful way to apply feedback while keeping the music secure. Tell your teacher whether you are preparing an initial video, a live audition or a callback so the preparation fits the next round.
